Molded vs. Printed Minifig Weapons: What's the Difference?

Molded accessories are solid plastic parts shaped in a precision mold, so their detail is in the shape itself. Printed parts carry custom artwork on their surface. BrickTactical makes both in house in the USA, and most builds use them together. Below is how they differ, plus a few of each you can shop right now.

What are injection-molded minifig weapons?

Injection molding forces melted plastic into a precision mold. BrickTactical molds every weapon, vest and accessory in house from ABS plastic, the same type of plastic most LEGO® bricks are made of. Our machines and materials are US-made too. Every weapon is sized to clip into a standard minifigure hand.

What does overmolded mean?

An overmolded part is two or more colors of plastic molded into one solid piece. The color is in the plastic itself, with no paint or printing to wear off. Each overmolded piece is made one at a time.

Are molded accessories more durable than printed ones?

They wear differently. A molded or overmolded part has nothing on its surface to wear off, because its detail and color are part of the plastic. Printed parts carry their detail on the surface. BrickTactical prints for durability, but heavy play will wear any printed surface over time faster than a molded part.

Do BrickTactical accessories fit standard LEGO® minifigures?

Yes. Our molded weapons and accessories are made to fit standard LEGO® minifigure hands and builds. Saber hilts have a standard LEGO® bar hole (1/8 inch / 3 mm) in the end. Printed minifigure parts are genuine LEGO® elements, so they fit like any other LEGO® part.

How do I tell if minifig accessories are good quality?

Check three things. First, the material: ABS plastic matches the feel and fit of LEGO® bricks. Second, whether the maker molds its own parts or resells imports. Third, how printed parts are made, and whether they're printed in house.

Which should I choose?

For everyday weapons and tactical gear, go molded. For a standout piece with color that never wears off, go overmolded. For camo patterns and custom artwork, go printed. Browse all 600+ BrickTactical weapons.
